This 1962 Ford Galaxie 500 XL was purchased by the last owner in December 1997 as a project. A restoration commenced soon after, with work including bodywork, new paint, frame repair, refreshed trim, a redone interior, rebuilding the engine, and more. Work was completed in 1999, and power comes from a believed-original 292ci V8 paired to a Ford-O-Matic transmission. Performance modifications include a 1957 Thunderbird intake, Autolite 4100 4-bbl 600cfm carburetor, and an electronic ignition system. In November 2022, the seller performed a mechanical service as detailed below. This Ford is now being offered by a broker with a set of fender skirts, restoration-related receipts, owner’s/shop manuals, a two-page November 2022 inspection report, and German registration.
Filler is reportedly present on the lower door skins and above the wheel wells, while some waviness is present in the rear fenders/quarters. Several other exterior imperfections are also noted. The included set of painted fender skirts are shown in the photo gallery below.
According to the seller, the convertible top functions well and is free of tears, but the rear window is cloudy as shown above. Rolling stock consists of 14″ Cragar alloys shod in Firestone rubber that dates from 2018 and 2019. Each corner is highlighted in the photo gallery.
During the 1990s restoration process, original-style two-tone vinyl upholstery was fitted. The seller reports that a torn seam is present on the rear seat, while the carpeting, door panels, and kick panels show age and wear as detailed in the inspection report.
The cabin has been kept largely stock to the seller’s knowledge, and modification is reportedly limited to an upgraded radio which has an inoperable tuner. The fuel gauge is also inoperable, though all other instrumentation is said to be functional. Only the horn’s center spoke currently functions. The odometer reads 81,511 miles, and total mileage is unknown.
This Galaxie retains what is said to be the original 292ci V8, which is linked to a Ford-O-Matic transmission. Modifications include a 1957 Thunderird intake, an Autolite 4100 4-bbl 600cfm carburetor from a 1965 Ford 352ci V8, and an electronic ignition system. On November 7, 2023, the seller worked on the carburetor, completed a LOF service, flushed and refreshed the cooling system, installed a new air filter, replaced a cracked fuel hose, repaired a muffler hanger, and installed a radiator overflow drain tube. The current owner has driven the car approximately 16k miles over the past 20 years.
The seller states that the inner sill attachments to the floor reinforcement channels are mostly rusted away. The frame, body, and suspension components are described as solid, and additional undercarriage pictures are displayed in the photo gallery below.
